Fun Friday

Once again PR's were all over last night. Great Job CFCP! Your fitness is not only constantly varied. It seems to be constantly improving. Keep it up. I found a couple of very funny things happening in the CrossFit world yesterday.

TEN WAYS TO BLUNT YOUR ATHLETIC POTENTIAL

  1. Not having goals, both short term and long term.A fitness regimen with no goals is like driving to a destination you have never been to before without a map or directions. Goals keep you on track. You seek out guidelines and information on how to achieve them. Make those goals!!!
  2. Avoiding your weaknesses. Why is it everyone and their mother shows up on the days we do some crazy workout, but when weightlifting days or running days come up, people suddenly don’t feel so well??? Weaknesses stem from a series of issues. Suck at an Olympic lift? It is probably tied into deficiencies in the strength and flexibility department. Can’t get through that whole 5k run? You need to eat better and build up your cardio/respiratory endurance. Attack your weaknesses and your strengths will improve.
  3. Poor nutrition. Food completely controls how your body functions throughout the day. It is the gasoline for your engine. An engine needs gas to run, and it runs better with good gas than it does with crappy gas. Start simple. Make changes in the quality of what you eat then fine tune it from there. Read More

Strong Core = Stronger Limbs


Lumbar support and posture are the most important reasons to work to achieve core strength. Having a strong core helps support your back and lessens the chances of injuries while you are active. A strong core also means that your arms and legs are stronger; the benefit applies to your body's entire well being. A strong core allows you the strength to move fluidly throughout your day without throwing out your back due to muscle weaknesses in the center of your body. Keeping your abs tight can also ensure that your hips have the best odds of staying properly aligned, as well.

2010 Games Season is upon us. The 2010 site has gone live and even though I won't be competing this year I'm still excited beyond belief. Last years CrossFit Games were epic and this year the level of competition is even higher. To kick things off there will be sectionals before qualifiers and if you plan on bringing an affiliate team to The Ranch in Aromas, CA you can also plan on qualifying for that as well. Check out all that was released this week at the 2010 CrossFit Games site.

Tribute to Fallen Heroes

The Fort Hood shooting was a mass shooting that took place on November 5, 2009 killing 13 people and wounding 30 others. Our extended community lost 4 of its own, members of Lumberjack CrossFit at Ft. Hood. Tomorrow is a special day...CrossFit is launching a hero WOD fundraiser for our 4 fallen Soldiers. On December 5th, they are asking affiliates and individuals to do two things: participate in the workout (as a display of solidarity with Lumberjack CrossFit) and to reach out to family, friends, and strangers to donate whatever you can.

Fight the Winter Blues With Diet


I’m looking out my window this first day of December and the sky is solid gray. So’s my mood. I’m no fan of winter, especially here in the gym.  All I want to do is eat comfort food and curl up for a long nap just to wake up and eat again. Where is the motivation to get up and workout? Below is a collection of interesting angles on how diet can fight the winter funk.
The Influence of Diet
Foods greatly influence the brain's behavior. A poor diet, especially one with excessive junk foods, is a common cause of depression. What we eat controls the levels of brain chemicals called neurotransmitters, which regulate our behavior--and neurotransmitters are closely linked to mood.

The neurotransmitters most commonly associated with mood are dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine. When the brain produces serotonin, tension is eased. When it produces dopamine or norepinephrine, we are more alert and tend to think and act more quickly. Consuming fruits and vegetables (complex carbohydrates) raises the level of trytophan in the brain thereby increasing serotonin production which has a calming effect. High protein foods, on the other hand, promote the production of dopamine and norepineprine, which promote alertness.

On the other hand, eating junk food reduces the levels of these hormones in our brain--increasing our stress and tension, and reducing our joy and alertness.

A recent wide body of research is showing that some pathways may link the Paleo Diet to mood improvement. Recent research has demonstrated that the mechanisms underlying depression and anxiety are:

a) Disrupted neurotransmitters metabolism
b) Disrupted neuroendocrine function
c) Disrupted neural plasticity

Ingredients
2/3 cup cashews, unsalted
1 tbs olive oil
3 garlic cloves
3 tbs lemon juice
Dash salt and pepper
Instructions
Blend all ingredients together in an electric blender until a smooth paste has formed.
Blend for a shorter period of time for a crunchy texture.
Serve with carrots or celery

1. Arrive early and stay late. Cheer, clap, and encourage others. Anything less is to cheat yourself of the experience, and to rob others of the gift of your presence and support as part of the community. Besides, if you're late, it's 10 burpees per minute.

2. If you forget to sign in, it's 50 burpees. And regarding any burpee incentives... you may cry and whine all you want, as long as we can hear you counting.

3. Accidents and injuries happen and usually come as a result of impatience. Don't be greedy. Slow down. Ask questions. Ask for help. Check your ego at the door.

4. EMPTY barbells were not designed to be dropped (neither were dumbbells or kettlebells). We don't want our toys, our rubber flooring, you, or someone else broken unnecessarily.

5. Chalk is useful, even necessary. It is also messy. Use as much as you need, but keep the excess inside the chalk bucket because all the extra dust keeps breaking our vacuum cleaner!

6. Clean up and put away all equipment after each workout. Clean up sweat, spit, blood, chalk, dirt, vomit, handprints, and whatever else you've left behind.

7. Grunting, screaming, cussing and otherwise making noise are all welcome and encouraged during a workout. There is such a thing as gentle, quiet strength, although most of us haven't mastered that yet. Also remember that there can be such a thing as too loud, crass, gross, or rude - please be respectful.

Thank you to our Veterans






















The United States has men and women serving our country, every minute of every day, to protect us from our enemies - both known and unknown.

As more information has been released regarding the shootings at Fort Hood, most of us wonder whether it was someone who just "lost it" or was it actually a terrorist attack. As a member of our Armed Forces, Major Hasan, had sworn to protect our country. When he made the decision to walk into the building and shoot as many people as possible, it was not as a member of our military, but in my opinion, as a man who decided that it was his mission to kill soldiers in the name of a religion. Was this a man who "lost it?" or was it a terrorist act?

It is not up to me to decide his fate. A military court will do that for him. However, I do know that our soldiers face dangers every day of their lives and they should not have to face danger on a military base, far away from conflict, by one of their own.

Americans are dead. Americans are injured. Our soldiers are in danger from unknown enemies. Instead of helping his religion, he has put his Muslim faith on the forefront of the newspapers again - in a negative light.

I know my opinion on this matter. As the daughter of a retired Colonel, the sister of a Lt. Colonel, and a former employee of the Department of Defense, I have a very strong opinion. I love our military, I respect their difficult job and I praise them for the difficult decisions they make on a daily basis and I thank their families for allowing them to defend and protect me.

Make sure and thank a member of our military today and especially our Veterans. That is your duty.

Holly Jolly Challenge

WHAT: Another Paleo/CrossFit Challenge. Teams of 4 will work together to stay on track through the holidays. Scoring will be based on a point system lined out on the Rules portion of this packet. Points will be rewarded and deducted on an individual basis according to your ability to follow required workouts and nutrition. In the end, points will be totaled for the final team score. All points will be controlled by a CFCP Coach. Your team is only as strong as its weakest competitor.

This challenge is not based upon physical ability. So having a “firebreather” and a “beginner” on your team doesn’t make a difference. What matters is your team members’ ability to stay on track with workouts and diet through this Holiday season.

WHY: This team challenge was designed to keep you from falling off the wagon during the holiday season. It’s a jumpstart on those 2010 resolutions. By signing up you will have committed to holding yourself and your teammates accountable for staying on track through the holiday season. Don’t put everything on hold until the New Year. Thanksgiving and Christmas are only 2 days out of the year. Spending the next 2 months neglecting your health and over indulging on holiday junk food will lead to a fat percentage increase and physical decline. Who wants to ring in the New Year with that?

WHO: Teams of 4 people (no exceptions). See a Coach if you need help forming a team. This is open to members or non-members. Each team member is required to workout a minimum of 2 times per week at CFCP. Non-members can buy in at $155 for 2x/week or $220 for 3x/week.
